imphalA strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck northeast India early today, sending panicked residents fleeing into the streets. The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 4.37 am at a depth of 17 km below the ground, was at Tamenglong which is located 35 kilometers from Imphal in Manipur.

quake-report-647_010416080136At least eight persons were killed and 100 injured in Manipur when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern India early Monday morning at around 4:36 am.

There is large scale damage in Imphal with many houses reporting huge cracks. Walls of many building have also collapsed.

According to the Indian Meteorological department, the epicentre was in Tamenglong district, in Manipur and state government officials said the epicentre was at Noney village in Tamenglong around 35 kms from Imphal.
